BALTIMORE, MD --Martaz Robinson secured a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds to help the Delaware State men's basketball team take down the Loyola (MD) Greyhounds 79-73 on the road Saturday.
The Hornets (4-6) had three players score in double figures, led by Robinson, who put together a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Deywilk Tavarez tacked on 16 points and Jevin Muniz chipped in as well with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Delaware State out-rebounded Loyola (MD) 36-30 in Saturday's game, led by Robinson's 10 boards. The Hornets also pulled down 10 offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.
Delaware State forced 15 Loyola (MD) turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Saturday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Muniz's three steals led the way for Delaware State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-9, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 14:05 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Muniz, to take a 14-13 lead. The Hornets then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 37-34 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 37 points close to the basket.
The Greyhounds proceeded to tie things up at 52-52 before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run to seize a 58-52 lead with 6:06 to go in the contest. The Greyhounds then fought back to even things up at 63-63 and send the game to overtime. Delaware State capitalized on 10 Loyola (MD) turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
Loyola (MD) then snagged a 67-65 advantage with 2:46 left in the first overtime before Delaware State responded by going on a 9-0 run to seize a 74-67 lead with 55 seconds to go in the period. The Greyhounds narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 79-73 win. Delaware State had a 36-30 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 15 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 10 offensive boards in the game.
