CHICAGO, IL --Martaz Robinson totaled 24 points and Jevin Muniz added 21 and the Delaware State men's basketball team beat the Chicago State Cougars 76-69 on the road Thursday.
Robinson and Muniz's stellar scoring performances led the Hornets (3-6) in the contest. Robinson tacked on five rebounds, three assists, and two steals and Muniz added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Alston Andrews also helped out with 10 points and two steals.
Delaware State grabbed 33 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Chicago State's 21, led by seven boards from Deywilk Tavarez. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into 16 second chance points.
The Delaware State defense held Chicago State shooters to only 35.4 percent from the field, including 28.6 percent from three-point range. The Cougars did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored 10 second chance points.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-4 advantage, Delaware State went on an 11-0 run with 14:17 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Muniz, to increase its lead to 17-4. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 40-31 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 40 points close to the basket.
Delaware State kThe Hornets return to action Thursday, November 30 when they face Chicago State University . Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.mept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Robinson's jumper, to grow the lead to 71-57 with 5:17 to go in the contest. The Cougars narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-69 win. Delaware State capitalized on eight Chicago State turnovers in the period, collecting nine points off those turnovers. The Hornets held the Cougars to only 35.4 percent shooting from the field. Delaware State never trailed in the second half on its way to victory. Delaware State had a 33-21 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 17 turnovers.
