DURHAM, NC --The Delaware State volleyball team displayed impressive determination with a five set win over the North Carolina Central Eagles Sunday on the road at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
The conference win improved Delaware State's record to 15-12 overall and 8-5 in MEAC action.
The Hornets were led by a double-double from Ella Sanders, who registered 15 kills and 12 digs on the day. Julia Kneba also added nine kills to help the attack.Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai also pitched in with five in the contest. On the defensive end, Maria Caratini chipped in for with 15 digs to go with seven blocks from Kim Czepukaitis. Delaware State had three players in double figures in digs. Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai had a team-high five aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the fourth set 25-14. How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-21. Delaware State trailed by as many as six points as North Carolina Central grabbed the advantage for good at 8-7 in a set that was knotted up four times before the Eagles took control.
SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 25-20 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Hornets took over the lead. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | North Carolina Central responded to win set number three, putting Delaware State in a two sets to one hole. The Hornets lost a tough set 25-19. Delaware State trailed by as many as seven points as North Carolina Central grabbed the advantage for good at 19-18 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Eagles took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 4 | Delaware State then responded to win the fourth set 25-14 to force a fifth set. The Hornets led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 24-12 before closing out the stanza, collecting 16 kills while only registering one attack error along the way.
SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Delaware State fired back to win the final two sets, culminating in a 15-8 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in set five to secure the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as an eight point lead at 14-6 before finishing off the set, collecting nine kills along the way. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four North Carolina Central attacks in the stanza.
Delaware State will return to action on Friday, November 10 when they travel to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The first serves are scheduled for 6 p.m
