Hornets Defeat Maryland-Eastern Shore 3-1 After Dropping First Set

PRINCESS ANNE, MD --The Delaware State volleyball team fired back after losing set one to secure a 3-1 victory (20-25, 25-16, 25-14, 30-28) over the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks Friday on the road at Hytche Center.

The win improved the Hornets' record to 16-12 overall and 9-5 in MEAC action.

The Hornets offense was paced by Ella Sanders, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .268, and by Alondra Maldonado, who had 12 while hitting .524. Defensively, had three players reach double figures in digs, including Gerren Tomlin's 14, 12 from Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai, and 11 more from Maria Caratini. Ella Sanders had a match-high three aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-14. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 20 assists from Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets lost set one 25-20 despite a solid performance on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .467 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set loss.

SET 2 | Delaware State tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 set-two win. The Hornets earned the set victory with the help of a solid performance on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .310 attack percentage with 12 kills in the set win. The Hornets rallied from down five at 12-7 to grab the win.

SET 3 | Delaware State won again in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to secure a 25-14 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a 12 point lead at 18-6 before finishing off the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State claimed a match win with a 30-28 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Hornets came out on top of a tight battle, winning in a stanza that was tied seven times and had three lead changes. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.

Delaware State will return to action on Friday, November 17 when they host the 2023 MEAC Volleyball Championship. The first serves are scheduled for 11:30 a.m
