FARMVILLE, VA --The Delaware State men's basketball team went into the half trailing Lamar 40-34, fought back from the deficit to tie the game at 73-73 and force overtime, but fell to the Cardinals 84-81 at Joan Perry Brock Center Sunday.
The Hornets (2-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Martaz Robinson, who put together a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Raymond Somerville tacked on 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks and Deywilk Tavarez chipped in as well with 13 points, six assists and three steals.
Led by Somerville's three offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
Delaware State forced 13 Lamar turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Tavarez led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 33-22, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 5:13 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Robinson, to narrow its deficit to 33-29. Lamar answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Hornets down 40-34 entering halftime.
Delaware State narrowed its deficit to 70-65 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Tavarez's three, to even the score at 70 all with 4:06 to go in the contest. Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 73-73. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 39 points in the lane.
Lamar then edged ahead in overtime, leaving Delaware State behind 84-81 at the final buzzer. Delaware State tallied 17 total assists in the game. Delaware State lost despite a 37-32 rebounding advantage. The Delaware State defense forced 13 turnovers. The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game.
