FARMVILLE, VA --Five Hornets put up double-digit points and Delaware State knocked off the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 72-64 at Joan Perry Brock Center Saturday.
The Hornets (2-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Martaz Robinson, who had 15 points and two steals. Wesley Oba tacked on a double-double from the bench with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Dean Shepherd chipped in as well with 13 points and two steals off of the bench.
Delaware State out-rebounded Bethune-Cookman 33-28 in Saturday's game, led by Oba's 11 boards.
Delaware State forced 16 Bethune-Cookman turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Saturday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Deywilk Tavarez's four steals led the way for Delaware State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-22, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 2:01 left in the first half to take a 29-26 lead. The Hornets then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 32-28 advantage. Delaware State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 32 total points.
The Wildcats proceeded to tie things up at 32-32 before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run to seize a 40-32 lead with 17:15 to go in the contest. The Hornets held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 72-64 win. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 40 points in the lane. Delaware State never trailed in the second half on its way to victory. The Delaware State bench came alive by scoring 27 points to its scoring output. Delaware State had a 33-28 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 16 turnovers.
The Hornets return to action Sunday, November 26 when they face Lamar University on the final day of the Longwood MTE. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m
