FORBES ARENA, Atlanta --The Delaware State men's basketball team got a 31-point performance from the bench on the way to a 71-63 win against the Grambling Tigers at Friday.
The Hornets (1-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Martaz Robinson, who had 19 points and five steals. Khyrie Staten added 16 points off the bench and Wesley Oba chipped in as well with 15 points from the bench.
Delaware State out-rebounded Grambling 29-27 in Friday's game, paced by 10 boards from Alston Andrews.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 17 Grambling turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Robinson's five steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-8, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 10:21 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Brandon Stone, to narrow its deficit to 17-15. The Hornets then closed the rest of the gap and grabbed a 32-25 lead heading into halftime. Delaware State capitalized on 10 Grambling turnovers in the period, turning them into 12 points on the other end of the floor.
Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Staten's three, to grow the lead to 67-54 with 2:08 to go in the contest. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 71-63 win. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 20 of its 39 total points. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down five of 12 long range attempts. Delaware State never trailed in the second half on its way to victory.
The Hornets return to action Monday, November 20 when they travel to New Jersey Institute of Technology. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m
