Delaware State Falls to Hofstra 66-53 After Halftime Lead

HEMPSTEAD, NY --The Delaware State women's basketball team went into the half beating Hofstra 35-33, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 66-53 to the Pride on the road Wednesday.

The Hornets (0-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Denijsha Wilson, who had 18 points and six rebounds. Savannah Brooks tacked on 13 points, six rebounds and four steals and Noami Zulueta added five points.

McKenzie Stewart pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Delaware State, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.

Delaware State forced 21 Hofstra turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Brooks' four steals led the way for Delaware State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-2, Delaware State went on a 9-0 run with 9:00 left in the first quarter to take an 11-5 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-15.

Hofstra kept adding to that lead, building a 20-15 advantage before Delaware State went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Wilson, to take a 25-20 lead. The Pride cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 35-33 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 20 points.

Delaware State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Pride 56-46 entering the fourth. Delaware State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.

Hofstra kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-48 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Deyonce Thompson's three, to shrink the deficit to 66-53 with seven seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down one shot to account for three of its seven points. The Delaware State defense forced 21 turnovers. Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 11 offensive boards in the game. Delaware State got six rebounds from both Savannah Brooks and Denijsha Wilson.

The Hornets return to action Wednesday, November 22 when they travel to Stony Brook University. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
