McKenzie Stewart Records Career High Single Game Rebounds in Loss to Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, NY --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 20-point performance from the bench, but fell 86-41 to the Stony Brook Seawolves on the road Wednesday.

McKenzie Stewart led the Hornets (0-5) with two points, 19 rebounds (Career High) , two steals and two blocks. Noami Zulueta also tacked on nine points and two steals and Denijsha Wilson chipped in as well with eight points.

Stewart pulled down nine offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Delaware State, grabbing 17 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 14 Stony Brook turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Stewart's two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-16 halftime deficit.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 62-32 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.

Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 86-41. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its nine total points.  The Delaware State defense forced 14 turnovers. Deyonce Thompson and Noami Zulueta led the Hornets with nine points apiece.

The Hornets return to action Wednesday, November 29 when they travel to Rutgars University. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
