RICHMOND, VA --Kiarra Mcelrath and Savannah Brooks combined to score 27 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Richmond Spiders 105-44 on the road Sunday.
The Hornets (0-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Mcelrath, who had 15 points and two steals. Brooks tacked on 12 points.
How It Happened
Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 28-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 57-18 halftime deficit.
Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced an 85-29 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 11 total points.
Richmond kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 88-29 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Kiarra McElrath's three, to shrink the deficit to 88-35 with 8:23 to go in the contest. Richmond responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 105-44. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points. Kiarra Mcelrath, Savannah Brooks, and Denijsha Wilson combined to account for 80 percent of the Hornets points. The Delaware State bench came alive by scoring 15 points to its scoring output. Delaware State got four rebounds from both McKenzie Stewart and Savannah Brooks.
The Hornets return to action Wednesday, November 15 when they travel to Hofstra University. Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
