DOVER, DE -- Delaware State fell 44-21 to Norfolk State at home Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 3-7 on the year and 1-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Hornets fell to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in conference matchups.
Marquis Gillis totaled 84 yards to lead the Hornets' ground attack and added two touchdowns in the game, picking up 4.2 yards per carry along the way. Ronald Jenkins also tacked on 16 yards on the ground, picking up 16 yards per carry. Rahkeem Smith pulled in three catches for 67 yards and one score.
Cameron Wright paced the Delaware State defensive effort, collecting one recovered fumble.Â
Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Norfolk State passing attack, holding the Spartans to 174 yards through the air.
How It Happened
After Norfolk State jumped out to a 27-0 lead, Delaware State scored with :52 left in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 27-7.After Norfolk State scored to increase its lead to 37-7, the Hornets scored again to narrow the gap and make it a 37-14 game.
Norfolk State scored to increase their lead to 44-14 before Delaware State responded with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter and closed the gap to 44-21. Neither team scored again in the game. Norfolk State outgained Delaware State 459-201 in the contest. Delaware State converted 2 of 7 third downs while Norfolk State was successful on 4 of 11. Maurio Goings led the Hornets with eight tackles. Cameron Sapp led the Spartans passing attack, completing eight of his 12 attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Kevon King led the Norfolk State rushing attack with 116 yards and one touchdown.
The Hornets will finsih off the season on the road at North Carolina Central University on Saturday, November 18. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.
