DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team came up short in a 65-33 loss to the Drexel Dragons at home Friday.
Noami Zulueta led the Hornets (0-2) with 10 points and seven rebounds. Arianna Johnson added six points and Savannah Brooks helped out with four points.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 13 Drexel turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the other end of the floor. Brooks' one steal led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 39-13 halftime deficit.
Drexel continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 41-13 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 41-19 with 7:17 to go in the third. Drexel countered and stretched its lead to 50-21 heading into the fourth. Delaware State took advantage of four Drexel turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.
Drexel kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-25 advantage before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Zulueta's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 61-33 with 2:25 to go in the contest. Drexel responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-33. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint. Delaware State got a team-high seven rebounds from Noami Zulueta.
The Hornets return to action Sunday, November 12 when they travel to Richmond University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
