Six Different Players Score Touchdowns in Hornets 51-44 loss to Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut - Delaware State got touchdowns from six different players, but it wasn't enough as the Hornets were outscored 51-44 by Central Connecitut State on Saturday afternoon at Arute Field.

The Blue Devils improved to 2-3 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 1-5.

Marqui Adams led Delaware State's passing attack with 301 yards through the air, tossing three touchdowns and two interceptions. The signal caller also added 46 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Marquis Gillis led all Hornets rushers with 79 yards in the contest, picking up 4.6 yards per carry. Gillis also added 48 receiving yards.

NyGhee Lolley reeled in four catches for 92 yards and one score. Ej Core got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in four balls for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Eric Montes paced the Delaware State defensive effort, totaling eight tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack. Team added and Aaron Angelos had in the loss.

Defensively, Delaware State did an impressive job neutralizing the Cent. Conn. St. passing attack, holding the Blue Devils to 86 yards through the air.

How It Happened

After the Blue Devils took a 7-0 lead, the Hornets got on the scoreboard with 14:22 left in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 7-6.Cent. Conn. St. increased its lead to 21-6, but the Hornets responded with a touchdown to narrow the advantage to 21-13.

Delaware State followed with a 17-yard touchdown reception from to at the 8:14 mark in the third quarter and took a 26-21 lead in the process.Cent. Conn. St. scored to grab a 41-33 lead, but the Hornets responded to tie it up at 41-41.

Cent. Conn. St. then fought back to take a 51-41 lead which a Delaware State field goal cut into with :44 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it a 51-44 game. Neither team scored again in the game.

The Blue Devils outgained the Hornets 584-426 in the contest. Delaware State tallied 27 points in the third quarter, accounting for 61.4% of their total score. Delaware State converted 4 of 11 third downs while Cent. Conn. St. was successful on 5 of 13. The Hornets had two players with more than eight tackles in the ballgame led by Jeffery Broughton, who had 11. Jonathan Cardoza-Chicas punted one times for the Hornets with an average of 50 yards per punt. The Hornets offense came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, scoring 20 unanswered until the Blue Devils got on the board again. Matt Jenner led the Blue Devils passing attack, completing six of his 12 attempts for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Howard led the Cent. Conn. St. rushing attack with 257 yards and one touchdown.

 

The Hornets return to action when they host South Carolina State University for the first MEAC conference match-up and homecoming on Saturday, October 21. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET.
