DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team beat the Norfolk State Spartanettes 3-1 (25-15, 25-10, 24-26, 25-12) Sunday at home at Memorial Hall.
The conference win improved Delaware State's record to 13-12 overall and 6-5 in MEAC action.
The Hornets attack was paced by Alondra Maldonado, who finished with 11 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .529, and by Ella Sanders, who had 10 while hitting .381. Maria Caratini got eight digs to lead them defensively. Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai had a match-high four aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-15. Delaware State served up six aces on the way to a second-set victory. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 19 assists from Naz Tuncay.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets won the first point and never trailed to secure the first set 25-15. Delaware State led by as many as 11 points at 24-13 before closing out the set, collecting 17 kills along the way.
SET 2 | Delaware State continued to roll after a set-one win by earning a 25-10 victory in set two. The Hornets led from the first point on in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 15 points, to close out the set. The Hornets hit .450 over the course of the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from six aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Delaware State couldn't finish off the sweep, dropping set three to make their lead two sets to one in the match. The Hornets couldn't hang on in a back-and-forth battle, losing 26-24 in a set that featured five lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team had a lead of more than four points along the way.
SET 4 | Delaware State then responded to end the match with a 25-12 fourth-set victory. The Hornets led from the opening point on in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 13 points, to close out the set. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.
Delaware State will return to action on Friday, November 3 when they travel to South Carolina State University. The first serves are scheduled for 6 p.m.
