DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team split a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games with the Hawks of University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Saturday.
Â
UMES claimed game one 6-3 while Delaware State rallied and won the night cap 2-0.
Â
Alan Alonso broke the scoring open for the Hornets in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field, trimming the Hawk lead to 4-1.
Â
Facing a four-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth,
Krew Bouldin drilled a single to the gap in left center that scored
Trey Paige and
Miguel Rivera to cut Maryland Eastern Shore's lead to 5-3 through six complete innings.
Â
A two-run deficit would be as close to the lead as Delaware State would see in game one as the Hawks added a run of insurance after scoring on a while pitch in the top of the seventh.
Â
Maryland Eastern Shore was led in game one by the three-run home run from Ryan Howe that came in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
The Delaware State offense was led by Bouldin's two RBIs and the multi-hit games of Rivera and
Alec Rodriguez.Â
Â
The night cap was highlighted by the pitching from both teams. Delaware State junior pitcher
Jordan Haddaway tossed six innings of shutout baseball in route to his third win of the season. During his time on the mound, Haddaway sat down eight batters, scattered four hits and only surrendered one walk.
Â
Junior relief pitcher
C.J. Loper came on in the top of the seventh and overcame an eventual bases loaded situation, securing the win and earning his third save of his campaign. He recorded a pair of strikeouts, including getting the last Hawk batter out swinging.
Â
Bouldin, with Paige at first base, drilled a two-run home run to left field for the game's only scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bouldin recorded another two RBI's on his only hit of the night cap, giving him four total between both games.
Â
Paige led the Hornets with a two-hit day at the plate. Daniels and Rodriguez also joined the hit column in game two.
Â
Delaware State will continue its four-game series with UMES tomorrow at Bob Reed Field for another doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
