DOVER, Del – The Delaware State baseball team split a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games with University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Sunday.
After being shut out in game one and falling behind early in game two, the Hornets were determined to salvage the doubleheader during the night cap.
Trey Paige broke Delaware State's scoreless seal in the bottom of the first with his first of what would be a multi-home run game for the sophomore infielder. Paige's round tripper cut the Hawk lead in half down to 2-1 through the first inning of game two.
With runners on in the bottom of the third,
Alan Alonso dropped a single into right field that allowed Paige to come home from second and tie the game up at 2.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Mike Worthington scored what would prove to be the game-wining run by way of an RBI-single to third base, scoring
Evan Harris and giving the Hornets a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Paige added an insurance run for the Hornets in the bottom of the fifth inning with his second home run of the game and third on the week as he homered in the Liberty Bell Classic matchup with Penn this past Tuesday. Paige finished his day perfect at the plate (3-for-3) with two RBIs. He recorded a hit in the matinee giving him four on the afternoon between both games.
Alonso,
Brady Daniels and Worthington all tallied a hit in the batter's box. Bouldin earned a free base twice in each game giving him four for the day.
On the mound, Harris struck out five Hawks, scattered four hits and four walks while only surrendering two runs. Today's win gave Harris his third of the season.
Ethan Edelson pitched three innings of shutout baseball in relief of Harris to preserve the win. During his time on the mound, Edelson recorded four strikeouts and allowed one walk.
Game one was highlighted by the complete game shutout of Hawks' pitcher Derrick Rabb, Jr.
Bouldin, Daniels, Paige and Worthington recorded the Delaware State hits during the matinee.
Delaware State returns to MEAC competition this week as the Hornets host the Spartans of Norfolk State University for a four-game series. First pitch from Bob Reed Field is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m.
