NORFOLK, Va. --- The Delaware State baseball team clinched a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series over Norfolk State with a 12-5 win on Sunday.
Evan Harris, who drove in four RBIs in yesterday's doubleheader, turned in a dominant performance on the mound this afternoon. Harris struck out a season-high 11 batters through his 7.2 innings of work. He only allowed three hits and two walks and surrendered two runs during his outing. For his performance, Harris earned his second win of the year.
At the plate,
Mike Worthington recorded a four-of-five day with a team-best two RBIs. Those two RBIs came in the top of the ninth by way of a single through the right side that brought home
Tre'Zhan Selby and
Krew Bouldin.
Alan Alonso also had a multi-hit day for the Hornets as he tallied a three-of-four day at the dish. Alonso and Bouldin belted the only two extra-base hits for Delaware State and as they each notched a double.
Delaware State strung three two-run stanzas together including going back-to-back in the eighth and ninth innings and powered a three-run fifth to secure the series win. The Hornets made their presence felt early on when
Trey Paige placed a single through the right side and scored Alonso for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Spartans tied the game at 1 in the top of the second inning, but a tie would be as close to the lead as Norfolk State would as Delaware State would break the game wide open in route to the win.
As a team, the Hornets tallied another game with double-digit walks, drawing a free base on 14 occasions this afternoon. Paige and
Robert Trujillo got on base by a walk three times each. Alonso, Bouldin and Harris each tallied a pair of walks.
Delaware State will take a break from MEAC action on Tuesday when they continue their road stand at the University of Pennsylvania for a Liberty Bell Classic matchup. First pitch from MeikleJohn Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
