DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team split a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games with Coppin State on Saturday.
Delaware State won game one 7-4 while Coppin State rallied in the night cap for a 5-2 win.
After being down by a run in the bottom of the second, Delaware State capitalized on a Coppin State wild pitch that allowed
Alec Rodriguez to score and tie the game at one through two complete innings.
One inning later
Krew Bouldin tied the game at 2 with a double to right field that scored
Alan Alonso from second base. A few batters later,
Mason Brewer put the lead in Delaware State's favor by way of a single to the gap in right center that allowed Bouldin to score for a 3-2 Hornet advantage through three frames of action.
In the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded Bouldin would seize his opportunity. He blasted a single right back up the middle scoring
Trey Paige and
Miguel Rivera outright, Alonso scored on a throw attempt and the Hornets put three runs on a board for a 6-2 advantage after four innings.
The Eagles got two back in the top of the fifth inning, but a 6-4 deficit is as close to the lead as Coppin State would get in the matinee. CJ Loper shut the door on a comeback as he pitched two innings of shutout baseball in route to his fifth save of the year. Loper recorded two strikeouts and only allowed two hits as he preserved the game one win.
Jordan Haddaway earned his fifth win of the season from the starting pitcher role. In four innings of work, Haddaway surrendered five hits and four walks. He sat down three batters and only gave up two runs.
Bouldin led the Hornets offensively in game one with three hits and three RBIs. Paige blasted his league-leading ninth home run of the season with a solo shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Coppin State jumped out to a 2-0 lead to begin the night cap and never looked back. The Eagles held the Hornets scoreless through the first half of the game and added another run in the top of the fourth for a 3-0 lead after four innings.
Delaware State broke the scoreless seal in the top of the fifth by way of a Coppin State wild pitch that allowed
Mike Worthington to come home and trim the Eagle lead to 3-1. Alonso put another run in the Hornet column via a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home
Miguel Rivera and cut the lead to 3-2 after five innings.
A 3-2 deficit would be the closest the Hornets would see to a lead in game two as the Eagles added insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Coppin State designated hitter Jordan Hamberg recorded his sixth home run in the top of seventh inning by way of a two-run shot over the right field wall.
Rivera paced Delaware State offensively in the night cap with a multi-hit day at the plate. As a team, the Hornets drew seven walks led by Alonso and Bouldin who were given a free base twice.
Delaware State will look to even the series tomorrow in the finale. First pitch from Bob Reed Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
