Dover, Del. (Apr. 22, 2022) --- Delaware State head men's basketball coach Stan Waterman has announced the signings of four newcomers for the 2022-23 season. The list includes two forwards, a swingman and a guard.
Former John Dickinson (Del.) High School standout Kareem Ewell has signed to attend the university and compete for the Hornets.
Ewell, a 6-7 / 190 pound forward, was a Delaware All-State Second Team selection after averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior for Dickinson. He tallied 15 points and three rebounds per game as a senior at the Patrick School in New Jersey, and also attended Olympus Prep in the Garden State.
Also joining the Hornets next season is former California State-Bakersfield product Ray Somerville, Jr. from Media, Pa.
Somerville, a forward (6-10/240) played in 15 games Cal Bakersfield from 2020-to-22 after sitting out the 2019-20 season as a redshirt. A 2019 graduate of the Shipley School (Pa.), he was a 2018-19 All-State Third Team honoree and two-time all-conference selection.
Somerville averaged 11 points and 11 rebounds per game, while blocking 46 shots in his senior season at Shipley.
The Hornets have also inked guard Arion Lewis of Philadelphia for the 2022-23 campaign. Lewis (6-2 / 175) most recently competed at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming, although he sat out the second half of the 2021-22 season there. He previously attended Cochise College in Arizona during the 2019-20 season, ranking second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game in 30 contests, including a high of 29 points.
Lewis scored more than 1000 points in two years at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pa. He was a three-time All-State selection and two-time conference first-team honoree, highlighted by the conference MVP award for the 2017-18 season. He was also a Third Team Academic All-America while at Laramie County Community College.
Rounding the list of the Hornets' 2022-23 signees is swingman Aaron Lemon-Warren of Philadelphia (6-5 / 200), and a product of Archbishop Ryan High School. He also attended Mt. Zion Prep School in Maryland. Lemon-Warren averaged 18.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game to help lead Archbishop Ryan to the Pennsylvania Class 5A during his senior season, and scored 984 points in his scholastic career.
"I am excited to add these outstanding young men to our program as we continue our rebuilding effort," said second-year Delaware State head coach Stan Waterman, who was named to the position in June 2021. "Each is tremendously talented with high character and a strong work ethic."
Waterman added, "Together, they will help provide a new foundation for our program. We are excited by what we believe they will bring to the university and the team. There is nothing more important for us right now than recruiting and developing people."
