Dover, Del. (Mar. 18, 2022) --- The Delaware State women's lacrosse team scored eight consecutive second half goals to break open a close game in a 17-8 victory over Howard at Alumni Stadium this evening. The victory was the first of the season for the Hornets.
Rossella Nardi led all players with season-highs of five goals and two assists for seven points in the game. The school record for goals in a game is six, which she shares with two other players.
Catherine Benn and
Saniya Craft had three goals each to help lead the Hornets to a team-high this season.
Emmy McGill and
India Rosiere tallied two scores each for DSU.
Delaware State took control early in the contest, scoring the first four goals, including Nardi's first of the game to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead at the 4:57 mark of the opening period.
Howard trimmed the Hornets lead to 5-3 when Craft and Nardi scored back-to-back goals to give Delaware State a 7-3 advantage at the half.
Nardi's third goal of the game put the Hornets ahead 9-3 with 10:30 left in the third period.
The Bison responded by scoring the next four goals to pull to within 9-7.
Delaware State answered with a 8-0 scoring run that started with a goal by
Catherine Bennet to end Howard's rally and stretch the Hornets' lead to 10-7 with 3:09 left in the third period.
Nardi and Bennet scored two goals each during the run, which ended with a winner by
Dorian Coehins to give the Hornets a 17-7 lead in the final minute of play.
Delaware State outshot Howard 34-28 in the game.
Nardi and McGill are tied for the team lead with nine goals and 11 points each for the Hornets.
Delaware State is back in action with another home match vs. St. Francis on Saturday next Wed. (Mar. 23). Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
