BALTIMORE, Md. --- The Delaware State University women's basketball team dropped a 67-55 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game to the Coppin State Eagles on Monday night.
Â
Delaware State jumped out in the early goings of the contest as freshman center
Unique Miller scored 10 of her career-high 23 points in the first quarter to help guide the Hornets to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first frame. Â
Â
Miller,
Janasia Law and
Alexis Moragne combined for the game's next seven points to open the second quarter and give Delaware State a 23-8 lead with 6:28 left in the half and would take a 29-19 advantage into the break.
Â
Coppin State showed that it would not go quietly into the night as they began a comeback in the waning minutes of the second half. Redshirt-sophomore guard Mossi Staples led a 20-6 run that spanned from the end of the second quarter through the beginning of the second half to put the lead back in the Eagles favor at 33-31 with 5:45 left to play in the third quarter.
Â
A two-point differential is as close to the lead as the Hornets would see as the Eagles pulled away and eventually sealed the victory on home court.
Â
Miller added 14 rebounds to her career-point performance for her second double-double of her freshman campaign. Law finished the night with 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the three-point line. Her four triples were a game best. Moragne ended tonight's game with nine points, five rebounds an assist and a steal.
Â
Delaware State will conclude its 2021-22 regular season in Princess Anne, Md. for a MEAC matchup with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday. Tipoff from Hytche Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
