EAST LANSING, Mich. --- The Delaware State University women's basketball program opened its 2022-23 season with an 86-37 road loss to the Spartans of Michigan State University on Monday.

Freshman guard
Deyonce Thompson paced the offensive efforts with six points by way of a team-high two three pointers. She collected three rebounds and one steal to cap off her first game in a Delaware State uniform.

Hornet newcomers
Savannah Brooks and
Brishonne Tollie chipped in with five points each. Tyshonne Tollie contributed four points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in her Delaware State debut.

Defensively, junior transfer
Jayla Johnson hauled in five rebounds while
Denijsha Wilson came away with four rebounds and a team-best two steals.

With four Spartans recording double-digit point performances, Michigan State was led by junior guard Gabby Elliot who totaled a game-high 14 points on five-of-eight shooting from the field. Elliot also grabbed six rebounds, two steals and handed out two assists in the win for Michigan State.

Delaware State completes its trip to Michigan on Wednesday when the Hornets visit the No. 25 Wolverines of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Tipoff from the Crisler Center is currently scheduled for 6 p.m. Â Â Â
