DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team earned a 3-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over the first-place Eagles of Coppin State University at Memorial Hall on Sunday.

Delaware State jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets 25-12 and 25-20. However, Coppin State would not go quietly into the night as the Eagles rallied to take the next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20 to force the decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Hornets rushed out to a 4-0 lead only to have Coppin State answer right back with four unanswered points to tie the set up at four.

After
Valeria Otero blocked a Yaniris Miller-Green attack attempt for a 5-4 Hornet lead, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run for a 9-5 lead and swinging the momentum back in favor of Coppin State.

Delaware State clawed its way back into the match with an eventual 5-0 run, giving the Hornets a 13-10 lead. Coppin State responded with back-to-back points, cutting the deficit to one, however a one-point margin would be as close to the lead as the Eagles would see after the Hornets recorded back-to-back kills from
Karen Cordero and
Kelsie Dawson to secure the home win.

Three members of the Delaware State volleyball team recorded double-digit point performances in the win, but the Hornets were led by
Alondra Maldonado who notched a career-high in both points and kills.

With 23 points overall and 21 total kills, Maldonado was the only player on the court to eclipse the 20-point and 20-kill mark in the victory. She tied for a game-high with four assisted blocks and handed out one assist.

Cordero finished her game with 17 total points by way of 11 kills and a game-best six service aces. Dawson also recorded double-digit points on the afternoon after landing eight kills, she also joined Maldonado with a game-high four assisted blocks and notched a pair of solo blocks for a total of 12 points in the game.

Senior setter
Malgorzata Andersohn dished out 32 helpers and tallied five service aces in the win.

Otero and
Sydney Lewis chipped in with six kills each. Lewis was in on two assisted blocks while Otero had one solo block as they both finished the game with seven points apiece.

Defensively, Delaware State held Coppin State to a .160 hitting percentage. Senior libero
Jasmal Cruz dug the Hornets out of 29 Eagles' attack attempts.

Delaware State returns to action on Tuesday for its rescheduled match with Morgan State and will conclude the regular season at home on Friday against University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). First serve on Tuesday is scheduled for 5 p.m. with Friday's game scheduled for 6 p.m.
