Hornets honor seniors with shutout MEAC win over Hawks

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State University women's volleyball team capped off its 2022 regular season with a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win over the Hawks of University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Friday.
 
Sydney Lewis and Valeria Otero led the Hornets with double-digit point performances led by a match-high nine kills each.
 
Lewis added one solo block and four assisted blocks finishing her night with a game-best 12 points. With her blocks tonight, Lewis finished the 2022 regular season with 103 total blocks on the season for a second-straight season of at least 100 total blocks. As a part of tonight's senior night ceremony, it was officially announced that she broke the program record for total blocks in a career back on October 16, 2022, at Coppin State totaling 334 thus far and will also leave the program as the career record holder for blocks per set average (1.02).
 
Otero added two assisted blocks to her night for a total of 10 points in the win.
 
Alondra Maldonado chipped in with seven kills and four assisted blocks for nine points on the night. Karen Cordero and Danielle Allen laned five kills each to help ensure the senior night win.

Setters Malgorzata Andersohn (21) and Alayna Lacy (16) combined for 37 of the team's 39 assists.
 
Defensively, Kelsie Dawson led with a game-best five assisted blocks, notched one solo block and with four kills registered a total of 7.5 points.
 
Libero Jasmal Cruz dug the Hornets out of 14 Hawks' attack attempts. During tonight's pregame senior ceremony, it was announced that Cruz eclipsed 1,000 digs for her career at West Virginia University back on September 16, 2022 and became the all-time digs leader against South Carolina State University back on October 30, 2022. With 1,249 digs in her four-year career, Cruz will also leave the program as the career leader in digs per set average (4.03).

WIth tonight's win, Delaware State finished the 2022 regular season on a six-game streak regular season record of 21-6 overall and a MEAC record of 11-3. 
 
Delaware State will prepare for the 2022 MEAC Volleyball Championship Tournament set to begin on Friday. The league will announce the seeding and bracket early next week as the Hornets will host this year's tournament at Memorial Hall.
