DURHAM, N.C. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team earned its third win in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition by way of a straight-set sweep over the Eagles of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) at the McDougald-McLendon Arena on Friday.
With a team-total 14 assisted blocks, Delaware State's defense was led by sophomore middle blocker
Kelsie Dawson who was in on a match-best five assisted blocks.
Sydney Lewis recorded the lone Hornet solo block in the win. Lewis also tallied four kills on seven attempts for a .571 hitting percentage in the game.
Delaware State held North Carolina Central to a .012 hitting percentage only allowing 17 kills on 83 attack attempts.
The outside hitting duo of
Valeria Otero and
Karen Cordero paced the offensive efforts for the Hornets with double-digit point performances. Otero tied a team-high in kills (8) and with one service ace as well as two assisted blocks, she collected 10.0 points on the night. Cordero landed seven kills and a team-best three service aces for a match-best 10.5 points.
Alondra Maldonado joined Otero with eight kills and with a pair of assisted blocks, she ended her night with a total of nine points.
Malgorzata Andersohn (17) and
Alayna Lacy (15) combined for 32 of the team's 40 total assists ensuring everyone got in on the offensive effort.
Delaware State will travel down to Orangeburg, South Carolina for another MEAC matchup on Sunday with the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University. First serve from Dukes Gymnasium is currently scheduled for 12 p.m.
