Hornets overpower Eagles for third straight MEAC win

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team earned its third-straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win after defeating the Bulldogs of South Carolina State University 3-0 at Memorial Hall on Sunday.
 
Offensively as a team, Delaware State recorded nearly four times as many kills as South Carolina State led by junior middle blocker Alondra Maldonado who landed a match-high 11. With three assisted blocks, Maldonado finished the afternoon with a match best 12.5 points.
 
Junior outside hitter Valeria Otero also notched a double-digit point performance (11) after racking up nine kills, one solo block and one service ace.
 
Senior outside hitter Karen Cordero chipped in with five kills and tied for a match-high three service aces.
 
Senior setter Malgorzata Andersohn passed out a match-best 28 assists ensuring everyone in a Delaware State uniform had a chance to contribute offensively. She joined Cordero in landing a match-high three service aces which all came in the Hornets' 6-0 start to the third set.
 
Defensively, Delaware State held South Carolina State to a negative hitting percentage (-.097) and only conceded 11 kills on 72 total attempts.
 
Senior middle blocker Sydney Lewis got in on three assisted blocks and handed out one solo block and with six kills, she finished her day with 8.5 points. Gabby Polynice, Kelsie Dawson, Danielle Allen and Julia Kneba all tallied a pair of assisted blocks to keep South Carolina State's offense at bay.
 
Delaware State returns to action this weekend for another weekend of MEAC matchups. First on Friday, the Hornets will travel to Baltimore, Maryland to take on the Bears of Morgan State University before returning to Memorial Hall to host the Eagles of Coppin State on Monday. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Sunday is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first serve.
