Dover, Del, (Sep. 5, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team is 5-1 this season after winning two of three matches at the St. Francis Red Flash Invitational this weekend.
After overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat Georgetown 3-2 in their tourney opener on Friday, the Hornets split two contests on Saturday, dropping their first match  of the season 3-1 to host St. Francis before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory over St. Peter's.
In Saturday's St. Francis match, Delaware State dropped the first two sets 25-23 and 27-25.
The Hornets stayed alive in the contest with a 25-21 victory in set three, but fell 25-20 in the fourth set to suffer their first loss of the season.
Adriana Rodriguez led DSU with 11 kills in the match (.350 hitting pct.), while
Kristi Gomez and
Alondra Maldonado tallied 10 each. Maldonado also tied for the team high with five blocks.
Alayna Lacy had 18 assists and a team-high 13 digs in the contest for the Hornets.
Delaware State bounced back from the loss with a 3-0 tournament victory over St. Peter's, it's second shutout of the Pen Hens and fourth overall this season.
The scores were 25-20, 25-16 and 25-14.
Maldonado recorded a team-high 12 kills, while
Sydney Lewis added 10,
Newcomer Andersohn Malgorzata, seeing her first action of the season, led the Hornets with 22 assists and 12 digs.
Gomez contributed four aces and eight digs to the win.
The Hornets posted a .455 hitting percentage in the second set, tallying 13 kills and just three errors on 22 attempts.
Rodriguez and Lewis were named to the Red Flash Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Delaware State returns home with matches against Bowie State on Tues. (Sep. 7) and a make-up contest with Manhattan on Wed. (Sep. 8), each starting at 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
