HORNETS RALLY PAST BEARCATS FOR 7TH STRAIGHT WIN

Dover, Del (Sep. 17, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team rallied from a first set loss to take the next three games in a 3-1 victory over Binghamton this evening, stretching its win streak to seven in a row. The Hornets dropped the first set 25-22, snapping a string of 18 consecutive set wins, but evened the match with a 26-24 victory in set two. DSU opened up a 2-1 lead in the contest with a dominating 25-10 win in the third set, and overcame a late deficit to take set four 27-25 for the match win.
The Hornets are now a MEAC-leading 11-1 this season, the team's best 12-match record since the program began in 1985. DSU's seven straight wins are also the most by the program since taking nine in a row in the 1986 MEAC championship season.
The Hornets used a balanced offensive attack to key their latest win.
Four players - Kristi Gomez, Valerio Otero, Alondra Maldonado and Sydney Lewis- tied for team high honors with 11 kills each for the Hornets.
Gomez also tied with Jasmal Cruz for the team high with 14 digs, while Otero tallied 12 digs.
Rookie Malgorzata Andersohn continues to impress at the setter position, dishing out a career-high 30 assists, while also contributing 11 digs to the win.
Lewis and Maldonado led DSU with four blocks each.
Adriana Rodriguez also played a key role in the win with seven kills on 12 attacks (.583), four aces and two blocks. Rodriguez was tops in the MEAC with a .484 attack percentage entering the match.
Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Hornets were a point away from falling behind by two sets when Binghamton opened up a 24-20 lead in the second game.
DSU rallied to score the last six points in the set, including the game winner on a kill by Maldonado, to tie the match at one set apiece.
The Hornets rode the momentum of their set two comeback to convincingly win set three 25-10. DSU had 12 kills and just two errors on 24 attacks (.417) to highlight the set three victory. Lewis had five winners on six attempts in the set to lead the way.
In the fourth set, Binghamton was a point away from evening the match with a 24-23 lead, but the Hornets rallied again. DSU scored four of the last five points in the set, including the match winner on another kill by Maldonado.
Delaware State posted a .285 hitting percentage in the match, collecting 52 kills and 17 errors on 123 attacks.
Binghamton had 42 kills and 21 errors on 126 attempts for a .167 percentage in the contest.
The Hornets and Bearcats will meet again this Sunday (Sep. 19) at Delaware State. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
