HORNETS POST 10TH SHUTOUT FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN

Dover, Del. (Dover, Del.) --- The Delaware State volleyball team completed a home-and-home weekend sweep of Binghamton with 3-0 victory in Memorial Hall today, the Hornets' eighth straight win and 10th shutout of the season. The scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16. DSU defeated the Bearcats 3-1 on Friday in Binghamton, N.Y.
Kristi Gomez topped all players with 10 kills and five aces to lead the Hornets. Alondra Maldonado added nine kills and Valerio Otero eight in the match for DSU.
Gomez was second in the MEAC and tied for fifth among all NCAA Division I players in aces entering this weekend's matches (0.55 per set).
Adriana Rodriguez contributed six kills on nine attacks (.556) to the win. Rodriguez entered the weekend with a .434 hitting percentage to rank 22nd among all NCAA players.
Jasmal Cruz had another solid all-around performance with a match-high 15 digs, to go along with seven assists and two aces for the Hornets.  
Delaware State is tops in the MEAC with a 12-1 overall record this season, the team's best start after 13 matches since the program began in 1985. The eight straight wins also rank second in team history. The MEAC champion 1986 DSU team holds the school record with nine consecutive wins.
The Hornets' .923 win percentage ranks 13th among all NCAA Division I teams this season.
In the first set, DSU was ahead 5-4 before running off six straight points to open up an 11-4 lead. The Hornets held their biggest set one lead at 24-12 on a kill by Mayah Ngundam. Gomez, Otero and Maldonado had three kills each, while Cruz and Alayna Lacy tallied four digs apiece in the set.
Rodriguez had four kills on four attempts and Cruz posted five digs to lead the way in the second set.
Gomez was the star of the third set with five kills, four aces and three digs.
Delaware State recorded a .198 hitting percentage for the match, tallying 39 kills and 18 errors on 106 attacks.
Binghamton had 20 kills and 20 errors on 91 attempts for a .000 percentage in the contest.
Delaware State has dropped just six of 43 sets played this season (37-6).
The Hornets will begin MEAC competition when they return to action this weekend. DSU will begin conference play at home against Howard on Fri. (Sep. 24). Start time is set for 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
