Dover, Del. (Apr. 23, 2021) --- Norfolk State combined for 17 runs and 22 hits, including four homers, in a sweep of Delaware State in a seven-inning MEAC North doubleheader at Soldier Field today.
The Spartans won the opener 7-4 and completed the sweep with a 10-6 victory in game two.
In game one, NSU pitcher Danny Hosley tossed a complete game and was three-for-four with a home run and two RBI to lead the Spartans.
Hosley produced the game's first run with a one-out homer to left center in the top of the fourth inning.
The Spartans stretched their lead to 3-0 on a two-run blast by Ty Hanchey in the fifth.
The Hornets scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single by
Trey Paige to cut Norfolk State's lead to 3-1.
Hosley drove in his second run of the game on a two-out single in the Spartans' four-run seventh inning.
Trailing 7-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Delaware State scored three runs on consecutive doubles by
John Weglarz,
Trey Paige and
Cole Garey.
DSU starter
Cole Bates (2-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 6.2 innings.
In the nightcap, Norfolk State trailed 1-0 before scoring all of its runs in the fourth inning. Korey Singh hit a grand slam to give the Spartans a 5-1 lead, and four batters later, Alsander Womack smacked a three-run shot to highlight the explosion.
Delaware State answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Spartans' lead to 10-6. Weglarz doubled in two runs, while
Tyler Cunningham, Paige and Garey had run-scoring singles in the inning.
Norfolk State reliever Seth Hockett threw 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two, to keep the Hornets off the board the rest of the way.
Hosley was three-for-four with two RBI while playing shortstop for the Spartans in game two.
Norfolk State (17-20; 13-5 MEAC) stretched its MEAC North lead to 3.5 games over Delaware State (11-16; 9-8 MEAC) with the doubleheader sweep
The teams will wrap up the series with another doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday at Soldier Field.
