Dover, Del. (Apr. 24, 2021) --- Delaware State trailed by four runs before scoring nine unanswered to defeat Norfolk State 9-4 in the second game of a seven-inning doubleheader at Soldier Field today.
The Hornets fell 3-2 in 11 innings in the opener.
 In the nightcap, Norfolk scored three runs in the first and one in the third to lead 4-0.
The Hornets began their comeback with two runs in the bottom of the third.
John Weglarz doubled with one out and
Trey Paige followed with a double to score Weglarz with DSU's first run of the game. Paige later scored on a sac fly by
Cole Garey to cut the Spartans' lead to 4-2.
DSU tied the game with two runs in the fourth.
Jared Gillis singled to lead off the inning and later crossed the plate on a Norfolk State error to pull the Hornets to within 4-3. Delaware State tied the game when
Tripp Kimmell scored on a fielder's choice ground out by
Miguel Rivera. Kimmell reached base when he was hit by a pitch.
The Hornets tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take the lead. Paige singled to lead off the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch to give DSU a 5-4 lead. Kimmell doubled in a run later in the inning to stretch the lead to 6-4.
Delaware State scored three insurance runs in the six to open up a five-run advantage. First baseman
Krew Bouldin singled in a sixth inning run, Gillis drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and a run crossed the plate on a ground out by Paige, who was three for four with two RBI in game two.
Delaware State starter C.J. Loper (2-3) pitched 5.1 solid innings to earn the win, while
Zach Dale threw 1.2 innings of relief to collect a save.
The Hornets' loss in the marathon opener overshadowed a strong performance by freshman starter
Jordan Haddaway, who allowed just one hit in six innings but was relieved in the seventh inning. Â
Despite giving up just the one hit, Haddaway and the Hornets trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
Norfolk State starter Justin Deloatch was equally effective. He did not allow a Delaware State hit until Paige reached on an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Still trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets had the potential tying run on base when Bouldin walked to lead off the inning.
Arthur Burrell, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Bouldin, advanced to second with no outs on a wild pitch. Gillis followed with a double to the fence in left center to score Burrell with the tying run. He was stranded at second as Norfolk State reliever Michael Portella retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The Hornets left a runner on base in the eighth and ninth innings, and left the bases loaded in the 10
th.
Norfolk State broke the tie when second baseman Alsander Womack singled to center with two out and the bases loaded in the 11
th to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
The Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the 11
th on a sac fly by Kimmell but had a runner on second when
Miguel Rivera flied out to end the game.
Delaware State had just five, while Norfolk State tallied three in the game.
