Baltimore, Md. (Mar. 6, 2021) --- UMBC scored nine runs in the fifth inning and five in the seventh to key a 20-8 victory over visiting Delaware State today.
The Hornets (0-2) led 5-4 before the Retrievers' fifth inning explosion. DSU trailed 18-5 after the UMBC seventh.
For the second time in its two games, Delaware State started quickly, scoring four runs in the top of the first today. The Hornets scored three runs to start the game in their season opener at La Salle on Mar. 2.
In today's UMBC contest,
Miguel Rivera singled to lead off the game and moved to third when
John Weglarz reached on an error. After a walk to
Krew Bouldin, the Hornets had the bases loaded with none out to start the game.
Trey Paige followed with a double down the left field line to score Rivera and Weglarz, giving DSU a 2-0 lead, still with no outs. The Hornets scored their third run of the inning when Bouldin crossed the plate on a groundout by
Cole Garey. Paige scored the fourth run on a groundout by
Tyler Cunningham.
UMBC got one run back in the bottom of the first when Christian Easley led off the inning with a homer off Delaware State starter Jordan Haddaway.
The Hornets added a run in the top of the second on a sac fly by Weglarz to open up a 5-1 lead.
The Retrievers tacked on two more runs in the bottom the second and another in the third to pull to within 5-4.
UMBC sent 12 batters to the plate and recorded just five hits in its nine-run fifth. Â The Retrievers were aided by three walks, a hit batter, an error and wild pitch in the inning.
The Hornets trailed 18-5 before scoring three runs in the eighth. Â Â Â Â
DSU was outhit 21-7 in the contest.
The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
