Dover, Del. (Mar. 5, 2021) --- Playing for the first time since Feb. 8, the Delaware State volleyball team returned to action with a sweep of St. Mary's of Maryland 3-0 in Memorial Hall this evening. The scores were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-12.
The Hornets won their fourth straight match to improve to 4-1 this season, the team's best five-game start since the program began in 1985.
Anadys Chimelis and
Simone Newell led DSU with nine kills each, while
Sydney Lewis added seven. Lewis recorded just one error on nine attacks to post a .667 hitting percentage for the match.
Adriana Rodriguez also tallied a .667 percentage, collecting six winners without an error on nine attempts. Â
As a team, Delaware State's .426 attack percentage marked a season high. The Hornets recorded 39 kills and only 10 errors on 68 attacks for the match.
DSU's
Jelena Dukic led all players with 17 assists, while Maria Caratini was tops in the contest with seven of the Hornets' 31 digs.
Lewis and Chimelis were credited with three blocks each.
In the first set St. Mary's led 2-1 before the Hornets ran off a season-high 14 straight points to open up a 15-2 lead. Newell and Rodriguez recorded two kills each during the rally.
DSU had 16 kills and just one error on 24 attacks for a .625 percentage in the opening set.
Chimelis posted three kills and
Alayna Lacy recorded three of the Hornets' 11 digs in the second set to lead the way.
Chimels also had a team-high four winners in set three.
Delaware State returns to action on Mon. I(Mar. 8) for their MEAC opener at Coppin State. The Hornets are home next Friday (Mar. 12) to face defending conference champ Howard. Â
