Box Score Baltimore, Md. (Mar. 8, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team's string of four consecutive wins was ended by surging Coppin State in the Hornets' spring '21 MEAC opener this evening. The Eagles won the match 3-0, by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19.
Delaware State, playing just its second match since Feb. 8, fell for the first time since a 3-2 setback to Old Dominion in the season opener on Jan. 24.
Coppin State won its's fourth match in a row to improve to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC North.
Miajavon Coleman led a balanced Coppin State attack with nine kills, while teammate Ashley Roman recorded a match-high 22 digs.
Valeria Otero (fr.) was tops on the Hornets with 10 kills. She also recorded 12 digs, marking the second time this season she has reached double-figures in kills and digs in a match.
Jelena Dukic (sr.) had a solid performance for the Hornets with 19 assists and eight digs, while
Jasmal Cruz led DSU with 17 digs.
The Hornets recorded a season-low .025 hitting percentage in the match, tallying 32 kills and tying their season-high with 29 errors, on 118 attacks.
The Hornets led 15-10 in the opening set before the Eagles fought back. There were six lead changes in the first set; the last was 19-19 after a kill by DSU's
Alondra Maldonado off a feed from
Alayna Lacy.
Coppin State outscored DSU 6-2 down the stretch to close out the set win.
Delaware State trailed 9-4 early in the second set and could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Eagles started quickly again in the third set, darting out to a 10-3 lead. The Hornets trailed 18-12 before scoring four straight points to stay close. DSU pulled to within 18-16 on a Coppin State error.
After a timeout by the Eagles, CSU scored five of the next six points to stave off the Hornets' comeback attempt.
Delaware State returns to action on Thursday (Mar. 11) at Howard. The teams will play again on Friday (Mar. 12) at DSU. Friday's match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
