HORNETS DROP TWIN-BILL TO COLONIALS

Arlington, Va. (Mar. 27. 2021) --- George Washington combined for 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State at Barcroft Park today. The Colonials won the first game 16-1 and completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, shortstop Steve Ditomaso was three-for-three with three runs batted in, while designated hitter Eddie Micheletti also drove in three to lead the Colonials' 17-hit attack.
GW led 7-1 before scoring nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to blow the game open.
Delaware State scored its lone run in the third on a two-out double by second baseman John Weglarz,  scoring Mike Worthington, who reached base on a fielder's choice after Robert Trujillo singled to lead off the inning. The Hornets only trailed 2-1 after the run. Trujillo had two of DSU's five hits in the contest.
DSU used five pitchers in the opener. Starter Krew Bouldin (0-3) was tagged with the loss.
In the seven-inning nightcap, center fielder Cade Fergus was two-for-three with a grand slam and five total RBI to key the win for GW.
Fergus' slam off Delaware State starter Cole Bates gave the Colonials a 4-0 lead in the second inning. He also drove in a run on a sac fly in the Colonials' three-run fourth to give his team a 6-1 lead.
The Hornets scored their only game-two run in the top of the third on a one-out single by Cole Garey, scoring Miguel Rivera, who singled to lead off the inning.
Weglarz was one for two with a single in the nightcap, and two-for-five in the doubleheader to post a  .478 batting average this season. He was tops in the MEAC and 11th among all NCAA Div. I players with a .488 average entering today's games.
The Hornets and Colonials will close out the weekend series with a single game on Sunday (1:00 p.m.)
