Dover, Del. (Mar. 11, 2021) --- The Delaware State volleyball team will play the first of back-to-back matches against five-time defending MEAC champ Howard in Washington, D.C., this evening. The teams will play again Friday at Delaware State.
The Hornets (4-2; 0-1 MEAC) are trying to bounce back from a loss to Coppin State in their MEAC North opener on Monday. DSU had won its previous four matches, the team's longest win streak since 2010.
Howard has dropped its last four matches to stand at 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the division. The Bison are coming off a 3-2 loss to Morgan State on Monday in Baltimore, Md.
Morgan State currently leads the MEAC North with a 2-0 record. Coppin State is second at 4-1.
Delaware State enters tonight's match as the MEAC leader in blocks at 2.05 per set. The Hornets are also second in the league in assists (11.2 per set) and kills (12.1 p/s).
Three Hornets rank among the MEAC's top 10 in blocks.
Erika Lindqvist (r-so) is fourth in the league at 1.06 per set, while
Sydney Lewis (so.) is fourth ( 1.0 per set) and
Mayah Ngundam eighth (0.84). Â
DSU freshman
Valeria Otero is third in the conference in kills at 3.21 per set and fifth in total kills with 61. Ngundam (sr.) is No. 9 in the MEAC in kills (2.2 ps).
Hornet freshman
Kristi Gomez ranks third in the MEAC in service aces (0.65 ps).
Delaware State is looking to snap a string of 14 consecutive losses to Howard, including the last seven by 3-0 scores. The Hornets have not defeated the Bison since sweeping two matches in 2012.
