COOMBER DOMINATES IN BLOWOUT VICTORY VS COPPIN STATE

Dover, Del. (Feb. 6) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeat the Coppin State Eagles 68-55 on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Hall Gymnasium. The Lady Hornets improve to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Delaware State stirkes first as Janasia Law finds Lyric Turner for a three in transition.

A few possessions later, Turner grabs the defensive rebound and passes to Sharajah Collins who scores using a double clutch layup in traffic giving DSU a 5-3 advantage.

Coppin State outscores DSU 8-4, including a floater from Hope Evans at the buzzer. Evans basket puts the Lady Hornets in a 11-9 deficit heading into the second quarter.

DSU forward Kiana Coomber ties the game up with a hook shot out a wonderfully designed play. A few possessions later, Sharajah Collins grabs a missed shot from the Eagles races to the other end of the court and finishes a layup in transition to retake a two point lead.  On the next possession Demi Moore gets the ball in the post and scores with a floater. Lyric Turner caps off a 6-0 run after she steals the ball from a Coppin State player and converts a difficult layup over an Eagle defender, giving the Lady Hornets a 17-11 lead with 5:55 left in the first half.

Coppin state scores five quick points, including a three-pointer from Aliyah Lawson to cut DSU's lead to just one point with 5:10 left in the second quarter.

A few moments later, Coomber misses her first layup attempt grabs the board and finishes on her second chance opportunity increasing their lead to three.

After Coomber makes two free throws. On the next offensive possession Demaurea Moore gets her defender to bite on a pump fake and drives by her for the layup pushing the lead to seven. Miajah Bullock continues the run, as she drives to the lane and finishes with the layup despite contact. Following a turnover from Coppin State, Bullock catches the ball off a screen, dribbles once to her right, then rises and drains the jumper pushing the lead to double figures.

Coppin State finally scores before the end of the second quarter, ending a 11-0 run for the Lady Hornets.

DSU starts another run to begin the third quarter. After two made free throws from DSU guard Janasia Law. Demi Moore gets the steal on the ensuing possession; she finds Law in transition who gets by her defender with a beautiful hesitation dribble and finishes with a scoop layup pushing the lead to 31-18

On the next possession Moore hits a jumper from the top of the key extending the lead to 15, leading to a timeout by Coppin State.

With just under seven minutes left in the third quarter, Coomber swings the ball to Turner in the left corner, she gets the ball right back as she cuts to the basket. As the help defense convergences on her, Coomber wisely drops a perfect bounce pass to Demaurea Moore for the layup, increasing their lead to 17 with 6:36 left in the third quarter.

After a miss from the Eagles, Melissa Sam grabs the rebound finds Collins in transition and she buries a jumper from the left wing, extending the lead to 19 with 1:59 left.

In the waning moments of the third quarter, Daije Harris grabs the loose ball. She takes off down the court, euro steps past a defender during the fast-break and finishes with the layup. Harris baskets increases their lead to 22.

Delaware State outscores Coppin State 28 -15 during the quarter, the 28 points scored is the most points the Lady Hornets have scored in a single quarter all season.

The Lady Hornets enter the final ten minutes up 55-33.

Kiana Coomber gets the ball in the post, reverses pivot and scores with a hook shot over her right shoulder to start the fourth quarter.

Coomber finishes with game highs in points (18) and rebounds (13), she also added four steals and one assist in the contest.

On the next possession Moore passes the ball to Harris who buries a three pointer from the right wing extending the lead to 27.

A couple of possessions later Harris passes the ball to Collins for another three-pointer from the right wing, pushing the lead to 63-35.

After a miss from Lyric Turner, Coomber grabs the offensive rebound and finishes the putback giving DSU a 65-35 lead with 6:27 remaining in the game. The 30-point lead was the Hornets' largest of the game.

Coppin State goes on a run of their own, after the Lady Hornets empty their bench, but they were unable to cut the deficit into single digits.

Sharajah Collins and DeMaurea Moore added 14 and 10 points respectively for the Lady Hornets.

DSU shot 27-of-58 from the field (46.6%) and 4-of-14 (28.6%) on their three pointers. They also shot 10-of-16 from the free throw line (62.5%).

1. Delaware State outscored Coppin State 38-20 in points in the paint.
2. The Lady Hornets scored 13 fast-break points.
3. DSU shot 77% from the floor in the third quarter.

Up next
The teams were scheduled to complete the weekend series on Sunday (Feb. 7), but the game has been moved to Tuesday (Feb. 9) due to the forecast for a winter storm on Sunday. Tip for the rescheduled game is set for 3:00 p.m. at Delaware State's Memorial Hall.
