GOOD START NOT ENOUGH FOR HORNETS IN LOSS TO LONGWOOD

Farmville, Va. (Dec. 4, 2021) --- Delaware State scored the first six points and led with five minutes left in the first half, but fell off in a 78-58 loss to Longwood today.
The Lancers improved to 5-7 on the season, while the Hornets dropped their fourth game in a row to fall to 2-6.
 Isaiah Wilkins led a balanced Longwood attack with a game-high 17 points, while two players added nine points and two others chipped in with eight.
Myles Carter led three double-figure scorers for Delaware State with 16 points, while D'Marco Baucum added 13 and Dom Fragala 11 for the Hornets.
DSU's Chris Sodom led all players with 11 rebounds and three blocks in the game.
After a slow beginning in the previous outing against Delaware, the Hornets were better at the start today, opening up a 6-0 lead on baskets by Sodom, Carter and Corey Perkins.
After Longwood battled back to take an18-15 lead, DSU scored eight of the next 10 points and opened up a 23-20 advantage on a three-ball by Fragala with 5:27 left in the first half.
The Lancers outscored the Hornets 14-4 the rest of the half to hold a 34-27 lead at the break.
Longwood was ahead 40-29 early in the second half before a 10-2 DSU run made it a one-possession game. Carter capped off the DSU spurt with a three-pointer to cut the Lancers' lead to 42-39 at the 15:12 mark of the second half.
Less than three minutes later, the Hornets trimmed the deficit to 47-45 on a slam by Sodom with 11:29 left to play.
Longwood pulled away over the next several minutes as the Hornets' lack of depth began to take a toll. DSU was outscored 15-2 over the next five minutes and fell behind 62-48 on a three-pointer by Longwood's Jordan Perkins with 6:40 left to play.
The Lancers held their biggest lead 76-53 with 1:23 remaining in the game.
Delaware State was 25-for-50 from the field for a season-best 50% for the game.  The Hornets also knocked down seven three-pointers in the game (7-for-17) , tying their second-best total this season.
DSU had just eight three-pointers in the previous two games (8-42).
The Hornets return to action on Monday (Dec. 6) at Liberty. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
