Dover, Del. (Dec. 2. 2021) --- Delaware State again struggled with its shooting, resulting in a 59-48 loss to The University of Delaware before a near capacity crowd in Memorial hall this evening. The Hens won their second straight game, and third in a row over the Hornets, to improve to 6-3 this season.
Delaware State dropped its third in a row to fall to 2-5.
The Hornets hit just 16 of their 47 shots from the field (34.0%), including three-of-14 from three-point range (21.4%). DSU was also plagued by 23 turnovers, resulting in 23 points for the Hens.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. was high scorer for Delaware with 16 points on six-of-10 shooting from the field, including three-for-five on three-point shots. He also helped key the Hens' defensive effort with five steals.
Ryan Allen was UD's second leading scorer with 14 points.
Delaware shot 44.4% for the game, knocking down 24-of-54 shots from the floor, including nine-for-27 from beyond the arc (33.3%).
"This was another good test for our young team," said Delaware State first-year head coach
Stan Waterman. "Delaware made it tough for us offensively because of its length and athleticism. I'm proud of the way our guys battled defensively as well, but our lack of depth was a factor. Still, I'm encouraged by the way we battled against a very talented opponent."
Myles Carter was again a bright spot for Delaware State, leading all scorers for the third game in a row with 17 points. Carter has combined for 66 points in the last three games to raise his season average to 16.9 points per game.
Freshman point guard
Corey Perkins was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with 10 points.
The Hornets never led in the contest.
Delaware State was scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the game, but only trailed 4-2 after Carter scored the first points for the Hornets on a jumper at the 14:13 mark of the first half.
DSU only trailed 7-6 after a basket by
D'Marco Baucum with 8:52 left in the half.
Delaware answered with a 9-2 run, and opened up a 16-8 lead on a basket by Jyare Davis.
The Hornets responded by outscoring the Hens 9-4 over the next four-plus minutes, and pulled to within 20-17 after a short jumper by
Dominik Fragala with 2:10 to go before halftime.
Delaware led 26-20 at the break.
The Hornets started the second half much like the first, failing to score for the first four minutes, while committing five turnovers to fall further behind.
Delaware took advantage by scoring the first eight points of the second half, and opened up a 34-20 lead on a three-ball by Nelson, Jr. at the 17:33 mark of the second half.
The Hornets trailed 37-28 before another run by the Hens. Delaware scored the next 12 points, highlighted by three-pointers from Kevin Anderson and Allen, to stretch its lead to 49-28 with nine minutes to play.
Delaware State outrebounded Hens 35-32. DSU's Baucum led all players with eight boards.
The Hornets begin a two -game road swing on Saturday (Dec. 4) at Longwood. Delaware State will also visit Liberty University on Dec. 6 before returning home to face St. Peter's on the 11
th.
