Dover, Del. (Nov. 16, 2021) --- Delaware State set modern-day school records for fewest points by an opponent and lead at the half in an 84-30 victory over Regent University in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Hornets snapped a two-game skid to improve to 2-2 this season, while the Royals fell to 1-5.
Dominik Fragala and
Fahim Jenneto led five double-figure scorers for the Hornets with 15 points each. Myles Cater chipped in with 13 points, while
Corey Perkins and
Khyrie Staten tallied 11 points each.
Fragala, Jenneto, Carter and Perkins each knocked down three-point shots to highlight the Hornets' 20-0 run to start the game. Â
The Royals finally scored on a basket by Damon Fitzgerald at the 12:57 mark of the first half to cut the DSU lead to 20-2.
The Hornets led 30-7 when Regent scored its final points of the half on a bucket by Randolph Holland with 5:05 to go before the break.
Delaware State led 46-9 at the half.
The Hornets' lead of 37 points was the largest at halftime in recorded team history, while Regent's nine points were the fewest ever at the half by a DSU opponent.
The Royals hit just three of their 25 first half shots (12.0%), including coming up empty on five on three-point attempts.
The Hornets, meanwhile, were 16 for 32 from the field, including eight of 15 on three-pointers (53.3%) in the opening 20 minutes.
DSU continued its dominance in the second half, scoring the first 23 points after the break to open up a 60-point lead. Staten capped off the run with a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 69-9 lead with 12:44 left to play.
Regent finally scored in the second half on the ensuing possession when Andrew Walston nailed a three-ball to cut the Hornets' lead to 69-12, ending a 17-minute-28 second scoreless drought for the Royals, Â spanning the two halves.
Delaware State held its biggest lead of the game, 73-12, after a lay-up by Staten off a Regent turnover with 10:19 left to play.
