HORNETS KEEP ROLLING… POST 13TH STRAIGHT WIN


Dover, Del. (Oct. 8, 2021) --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team continued its red-hot play and strengthened its lead in the MEAC standings with a 3-0 victory over North Carolina Central before an energetic crowd in Memorial Hall this evening. The scores were 25-13, 25-12 and 25-20.
The Hornets added to their school-record with 13 wins in a row to improve to 5-0 in the MEAC and 17-1 overall. DSU was fourth among all NCAA Division I teams in won-loss percentage entering the match.
North Carolina Central, now 3-1 in the MEAC and 4-9 overall, was the only other undefeated team in conference play entering tonight's match.
Delaware State has won by 3-0 scores 11 times and taken 39 of 41 sets during the win streak. Overall, the Hornets have 14 shutout wins, including the last four contests, and are 52-7 in sets played this year (15-1 in MEAC).
The Hornets also improved to 10-0 at home this season.
In tonight's match, Karen Cordero led all players with a season-and-match-high 16 kills on 24 attacks for a .625 hitting percentage. Cordero is in her first season with the Hornets after leading all junior college players in kills and earning JUCO All-America honors during the 2020-21 season.
Sydney Lewis and Valeria Otero added nine kills each, while Alondra Maldonado added eight for DSU. Lewis recorded her nine kills on 11 attacks for .727 hitting percentage.
Delaware State held a 44-37 edge in digs in the match. Jasmal Cruz led all players with 15, while Otero was second in the contest with 12.
DSU's Malgorzata Andersohn had a match-high 22 assists. She also tallied two aces in the contest. She was No. 2 in the nation in aces per set entering tonight's match.
The Hornets had 49 kills and 14 errors on 107 attacks for a .327 hitting percentage in the contest. North Carolina Central recorded a .087 attack percentage in the match, tallying 25 kills and 17 errors on 92 attempts. Delaware State was No. 1 in the nation with an opponents' attack percentage of .110 before tonight's match.
The Hornets will go for 14 wins in a row and wrap up a stretch of four straight home matches with a contest against South Carolina State on Sunday (Oct. 10). Start time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
