Durham, N.C. (Oct. 29, 2021) --- The Delaware State women's volleyball team has dropped its second straight match, falling to North Carolina 3-2 in a MEAC contest this evening.
The Hornets, winners of a school-record 16 straight contests before their current three-match road swing, are now 20-3 overall and 8-2 in the MEAC.
Delaware State won tonight's first set 25-19, but NC Central evened the contest with a 25-18 in set two. The Hornets regained the lead in the match with a marathon 34-32 win in the third set. The Eagles stayed alive in the contest, pulling out a 25-21 victory in set four.
The Eagles carried their momentum into the fifth set, winning 15-10 to avenge a 3-0 loss to DSU on Oct. 8 in Dover, Del.
Ammaarah Williams led North Carolina Central with 19 kills (.302 hitting %) and tied for team high honors with 12 digs.
Arlanda Faulkner added 18 kills for the Eagles.
Delaware State's
Kristi Gomez led all players with 20 kills, tops for a Hornet this season. She also had 12 digs in the contest.
Alondra Maldonado added 16 kills for the Hornets, while
Sydney Lewis had 10 winners on 17 attacks (.412) and tied for the match-high with four blocks (two solo).
In addition to Gomez,
Valeria Otero (17),
Alayna Lacy (13) and
Malgorzata Andersohn (11) also reached double-figures in digs for Delaware State. Andersohn also had a season-high 39 assists.
The Hornets posted a .183 hitting percentage in the contest, tallying 68 kills and 33 errors on 181 attacks.
NC Central had 58 kills and just 18 errors on 156 attempts for a .256 percentage.
The Hornets will look to close out the road swing on a winning note when they visit South Carolina State on Sunday. The match is set to start at 12:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
