Dover, Del. (Jan. 23, 2021) --- Delaware State's
Nathanael Guy (fr.; Dover, Del.) took first place in the 800 meter run, while Tre Johnson (sr.; Smyrna, Del.) was tops among collegiate competitors in the triple jump to highlight the performances of the Hornet men at the season-opening 2021 Liberty Elite Invitational indoor meet in Lynchburg, Va., this weekend.
Guy, the 2020 Delaware High School indoor 800-meter champion as a senior at Dover High School, made his first collegiate 800 race a memorable one, topping the field with a time of one-minute-56.91-seconds, more than a second ahead of second place finisher Mason Bhatia, a senior from UNC Charlotte (1:57.98). His 800 time is also No. 1 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference so far this season.
Guy also ran the third leg on Delaware State's second place 4x400-meter relay team, joining
Julian Brown, Thomas Kalieta and
Malachi Little to post a time of three-minutes-19.67-seconds, just behind first place Charlotte at 3:19.25.
Johnson had the best performance among collegians in the triple jump with a top leap of 14.71 meters (48-03.25). The second best college competitor in the event topped out at 14.33 meters (47-00.25).
Other notable performances by the Delaware State men was a fourth place finish by
Albert Norman (so.; Georgetown, Del.) in the 3000-meter run with a time of eight-minutes-55.45-seconds, the best by a Hornet since the 1980s.
Brown (sr.) and Kalieta (r-jr.) finished third and fourth in the 400 meter dash with times of 50.20 seconds and 50.68 seconds, respectively.
