Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 12, 2020) --- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has announced the suspension of all sports competitions through the end of the 2020 spring semester due to global concerns over the coronavirus (COVID19).
The announcement was made today during the annual MEAC Basketball Tournament, which ended after today's Delaware State / Morgan State quarterfinal round contest.
The conference also announced that its annual bowling championship, scheduled for next weekend in Chesapeake, Va., has also been suspended.
According to Dr. Wayne Frederick, Chair of the Council of Chief Executive Officers for the MEAC and President of Howard University, these actions have been taken to protect the well-being of the participants, staffs and spectators in light of the ongoing Coronavirus threat.
"While we are disappointed that the excellence of our student-athletes after months of preparation will not be showcased, their health and safety as well as the health and safety of the wider community are of paramount importance." Â Â Â Â Â Â
The MEAC action follows the announcement by the NCAA that all remaining 2019-20 national championship competitions have been canceled.
The NCAA released the following statement on Thursday afternoon:
Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.
In light of today's actions, Delaware State is cancelling its remaining 2019-20 athletics competitions, practices and other related activities.
