Dover, Del. (Feb. 3) The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeat the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 72-58. DSU improves to 9-11 overall and 5-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). DSU is off to its best MEAC start since winning five of six to begin the 2012-13 conference season. Also the five conference wins ties the amount of wins they had in the MEAC for all of last season.
"Me and my staff went through a lot last year it was tough, we won five games in conference all last year. I'm pleased man these kids are working hard. They've been together for four months it's twelve new kids with no summer (to practice) so for them to do that it's special." Coach Dave Caputo stated.
The Lady Hornets opened the game on fire.
Janasia Law scores the first basket driving in the lane and finishing with a layup on their second possession of the game. On the next possession DSU forward
Tierra Floyd dishes the ball to
Lyric Turner who buries a three-pointer. The run continues as
Janasia Law finds
Lanayjha Ashe for an open three-pointer, giving DSU an 8-0 lead with 7:54 left in the first quarter. After the back to back threes. DSU gets another defensive stop, Law grabs the rebound and passes it to
DeMaurea Moore in transition for the easy layup. Delaware State ends the 13-0 run with another three-pointer from
Lyric Turner with 6:11 left in the quarter.
After Maryland Eastern Shore cut the deficit to just four early in the second quarter, DSU responds with a 15-6 run, capped off by Ashe grabbing the offensive rebound and scoring on the put back. Ashe's basket gives DSU a 32-19 lead with 2:20 left in the half.
The Lady Hornets create serious separation in the third quarter, as their offense shoots a very efficient 8-of-16 from the field (50.0%) including three-made three-pointers. DSU's
Lyric Turner spins past her primary defender and flips the ball in despite being foul on her way to the hoop. Her basket and subsequent made free throw give DSU their largest lead at 25 with 2:19 left in the third quarter.
Maryland Eastern Shore are unable to get the deficit down to single digits in the fourth quarter, the Hawks cut the deficit down to 11 with one-minute left in the game, but they never seriously threaten the Lady Hornets.
Delaware State shot 25-of-62 (40.3%) from the field and 10-of-26 (38.5%) on three-pointers.
Lyric Turner leads three Lady Hornets in double figures with 20 points she also adds four rebounds. When asked about how they were able to score so efficiently Turner replies " So many times when we are in the gym (practicing) in the shots are falling, eventually we are going to start knocking the shots down (in the game).
Lanayjha Ashe scores 19 points and grabs eight rebounds, I was just being patient, said Ashe when speaking about how she scores, let (the game) come to me and if I was open, I was going to let it fly.
In addition,
Janasia Law records her first collegiate career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. When Law was asked how she can get so many rebounds despite her small stature, she confidently replies "Do you see me jump?! Do you see how high I can jump?!."
Maryland Eastern Shore were held to just 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the field, including a lowly 2-of-20 (10.0%) on their three-point attempts.
