DSU’s “APPROACHING STORM” TO PERFORM AT2020 PENN RELAYS

Dover, Del. (Feb. 27, 2020) --- Delaware State University's presence at the historic 2020 Penn Relays will include more than just Hornet athletes.
Penn Relays officials announced this week that DSU's popular "Approaching Storm" marching band will perform at this year's event to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of Historically Black Colleges and Universities participating in the prestigious track and field carnival at historic Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia .
The Delaware State band has been invited to perform its electrifying show on Fri., Apr. 24, the broadest day of HBCU participation at the 2020 relays.
"This is almost certainly the first time in more than a century we've had a band play at the Penn Relays," said Relays Director Dave Johnson. "In more than 50 years of looking at old programs and news clips, the only times I've verified a band performing were during the meet in the World War I year of 1918, and for the first three or four years of the meet when a band program would precede the start of the meet. This should be a terrific occasion during Friday's events."
The "Approaching Storm" and its members have served shining ambassadors around the world for Delaware State. The band has performed with pride, enthusiasm and excellence in including in London, Paris, the Netherlands and China, along with several National Football League stadiums, including Veterans Stadium and Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles) , M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore Ravens) and the Pontiac Silverdome (Detroit Lions) .
The band has even graced the stage of the world famous Apollo Theater in New York City, and most recently appeared on ESPN's First Take.
"The Penn Relays is an iconic event on the East Coast. We are overjoyed to have the opportunity to perform at this event," said Dr. Harvey Bullock, Jr., the Director of the Approaching Storm and a 1995 DSU graduate. "This will be a new type of event that we haven't performed at before, so this is very special for not only for our band program, but for our university as well. We hope that the storm will heighten the already electric atmosphere generated at the Penn Relays. So everyone will need to be prepared ? because the Storm is approaching!"
