Baltimore, Md. (Feb. 24) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets were unable to sweep the season series as they fall to the Morgan State Bears 61-41. DSU drops to 12-14 overall and 8-5 in the MEAC. Delaware State had a chance to leap in front of the Bears with a win, but now they are 1.5 games back of Morgan State for fourth place in the conference.
After the Bears open the game with a three-pointer from Ashia McCalla, DSU responds with a 7-0 run. The flurry starts with Lady Hornets guard Janasia Law finding Sharajah Collins for a layup despite being fouled. Collins misses the free throw, but Tierra Floyd grabs the offensive rebound. A few seconds later Lanayjha Ashe gets the ball and dishes it to DeMaurea Moore for a layup. On the next possession Law passes to Floyd for three, capping off the 7-0 run with 7:55 left in the first quarter.
At the 5:48 mark Law grabs the defensive rebound and passes the ball to Lanayjha Ashe. Ashe darts a pass in transition to DeMaurea Moore who finishes the layup despite being fouled. Moore sinks the free throw to complete the three-point play and gives DSU a 12-5 lead.
The Bears respond with a 9-2 run to end the first quarter. Ashia McCalla caps of the run by drilling her second three-pointer of the quarter with :28 seconds remaining.
With just over a minute into the second quarter the Lady Hornets regain a 17-14 lead, as Ashe gets the steal and passes the ball ahead to Law. The point guard then finds Floyd trailing the play and passes it to her and Floyd hits her second three of the game.
The lead exchanges hands multiple times throughout the quarter. However, the Lady Bears rip off an 8-2 run late in the second. Jihayah Chavis hits a jumper with 31 seconds left in the half, giving the Bears a 27-23 lead heading into halftime.
The wheels fall off for the Lady Hornets in the second half. Morgan State outscores Delaware State 34-18 in the second half. Â The Bears score 17 points off turnovers in the final two quarters, putting the game out of reach.
Delaware State shot a meager 14-of-50 from the field (28.0%) and an abysmal 3-of-17 (17.6%) on their three-point attempts.
Tierra Floyd records a team high 10 points, six rebounds, one block and one steal.
DeMaurea Moore grabs a season high 13 rebounds and adds nine points.
Morgan State made just 23-of-68 on their field goal attempts (33.8%) including just 6-of-20 (30.0%) from three-point range.
Chelsea Mitchell leds all players with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Ashia McCalla adds 13 points.
