Baltimore, Md. (Feb. 22, 2020) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team hit its first eight shots and 10-of-13 in the first quarter to highlight a 72-65 victory over Coppin State at CSU's Physical Education Complex this afternoon.
The Lady Hornets' 76.9% first quarter shooting percentage marked a school record for a quarter. DSU also shot a season-high 55.3% for the game (26-for-47), highlighted by a .667 mark in the first half (14-21).
The Lady Hornets won for the third in four games to improve to 12-12 overall and 8-4 in the MEAC. DSU was fifth in the MEAC standings entering the game, but tied in the loss column with fourth place North Carolina A&T and third place Morgan State.
Delaware State also swept the season series from the Eagles for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Sha Collins led a balanced DSU scoring attack with 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field (2-3 3ptFGs) and 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Collins also led all players with five assists.
Tierra Floyd added 15 points. She was 5-for-9 from the floor, including 3-of-6 on three-point shots, and 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
Demi Moore hit five of her seven field goal attempts and was perfect on two shots from the free throw line to contribute 12 points to the win.
The Lady Hornets hit their first eight shots, including two three-pointers by Floyd, and opened up an 18-7 lead on a lay-up  by Moore with five minutes left in the first quarter.
DSU did not miss its first shot in the game until an errant three-point attempt with
Lanayjha Ashe with 3:41 left in the opening quarter.
Delaware State led 22-11 after the first quarter and held a 36-24 advantage at the half.
The Lady Hornets were ahead by as many as 19 in the third quarter, but Coppin State pulled to within four points (55-51) with three minutes left to play.
Ashe nailed a three-pointer in the last two minutes to give DSU a 69-60 lead.
The Lady Hornets return to action at Morgan State on Monday (Feb. 24). DSU defeated the Bears 69-61 in their first meeting on Jan. 4 in Dover, Del.
