Orangeburg (Feb. 10) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeat the South Carolina State Bulldogs 76-64 on Saturday night at the Smith-Hammond-Middelton Memorial Center. The Lady Hornets never trailed in the game. DSU improves to 10-12 on the season and 6-3 in the MEAC.
DSU guard Lanayjha Ashe finds Lyric Turner open for a three-pointer on their first possession of the game.
After a made basket by the Bulldogs, Turner finds DeMaurea Moore for the mid-range jumper, taking a 5-2 lead with 9:04 left in the quarter.
With 5:33 left in the first. Delaware State guard Janasia Law dishes the ball to Turner who buries her second three of the game, extending their lead to 10-6. About a minute later Zoe Holmes grabs a defensive rebound and throws an outlet pass to Miajah Bullock for the transition layup, increasing the Lady Hornets lead to six points. Â On the following possession Naomi Shorts passes the ball to Ashe who knocks down the three-pointer, capping off an 8-0 run. The Lady Hornets flurry gives them a 15-6 lead with 3:38 left in the first quarter.
South Carolina State cuts the lead down to just four after Heniaya Moten makes a three-pointer with 4:32 left in the half.
The Lady Hornets deliver another run, as Miajah Bullock answers right back with a three of her own. After empty possessions by both teams, Lanayjha Ashe hits another three-pointer extending their lead to ten. Heniaya Moten hits another three for the Bulldogs but Ashe comes back down hits a three-pointer again. Then Lady Hornets forward Tierra Floyd hits a three-pointer, giving DSU a 13-point lead.
Late in the half Bulldogs' Jacquece Alston hits a jumper, but the reoccurring theme happens again, as Lanayjha Ashe hits her third three-pointer of the game. The Lady Hornets enter halftime up 39-25.
Ashe finishes the game with a team high 19 points, she also tackes on five rebounds and three assists.
Janasia Law gives DSU their largest lead at eighteen points, as she scores a layup on the fast break with 9:05 left in the third.
South Carolina State briefly cut the lead down to single digits, after Moten hits two free throws with 1:13 left in the quarter. Zoe Holmes makes a layup on the following possession, giving DSU a 57-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornets go on a 14-6 run, effectively putting the game out of reach. Tierra Floyd makes a layup extending their lead to 71-55 with just over 3 minutes left in the game.
Delaware State shoots an efficient 27-of-52 (51.9%) from the field including 8-of-17 (47.1%) on three-point attempts.
Tierra Floyd scores 14 points, DeMaurea Moore scores a season high 12 points and adds four rebounds and a steal. Janasia Law fills up the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, six assist and one steal. Lyric Turner adds nine points, two rebounds and two assists.
South Carolina State makes 22-of-54 (40.7%) of their field goal attempts but just 6-of-18 (40.7%) on their three-point attempts.
Heniaya Moten is the only bulldog in double figures she scores a game high 25 points.
