Dover. Del. (Feb. 15) --- Delaware State Lady Hornets win today against conference opponent Florida A&M Rattlers (FAMU) 61-53. The Lady Hornets improve to 11-12 overall and 7-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). This is the best start for DSU in the MEAC, since the 2008-2009 season, when that team went 11-2 to start conference play.
The Lady Hornets also snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Rattlers, defeating Florida A&M for the first time since a 57-53 victory during the 2012-13 campaign. The Lady Hornets topped the Rattlers in Memorial Hall for the first time since the 2008-09 season.Â
With the score being 2-2 after two minutes of play DSU went on a 7-0 run. Lady Hornets guard Lyric Turner starts the run by drilling a three-pointer. On the following possession Janasia Law finds DeMaurea Moore for a layup. Turner caps off the run by scoring a layup in transition, increasing the lead to 9-2 with 7:00 left in the quarter.
Florida A&M scores six straight, cutting the lead down to just one with 6:09 left in the first.
At the 2:52 mark of the 1st quarter when Shalaunda Burney-Robinson scores in the post, giving the Rattlers their first lead at 12-11.
DSU trails 18-15, after the first ten minutes of play.
Delaware State opens the second quarter with a 6-0 run. DSU uses a full court press which leads to Miajah Bullock intercepting a pass and scoring a layup in transition, giving DSU a 21-18 lead with 8:46 remaining in the half.
Tierra Floyd grabs an offensive rebound and finishes with a layup to put DSU up 29-25 with 1:41 left in the half. Â On the Rattlers next possession, DSU guard Janasia Law steals an errant pass and outlets the ball to Bullock for a Fastbreak layup, pushing the lead to six. After a Rattlers basket, Turner crosses her defender and scores with an acrobatic reverse layup with 21 seconds left in the second quarter. DSU lead increases to 36-27 heading into halftime, as Tierra Floyd hits a 35 foot three-pointer at the buzzer. Â

Delaware State's largest lead of the game was at 11 with 4:19 left in the third. DSU got to that margin as Zoe Holmes deflects a pass into the arms of Lanayjha Ashe, who drives in transition and finishes with a pull-up jumper. The Rattlers cut the lead down to six heading into the final ten minutes of play.
Up just four points with 4:10 left in the game, Zoe Holmes banks in the free throw line jumper. After a Rattlers basket, Holmes hits a turnaround fadeaway, giving DSU a 55-49 lead with 3:29 left.
After two minutes of scoreless basketball, Holmes finds Janasia Law for an open three-pointer from the right wing. Law's three gives DSU a 58-49 lead with 1:22 left in the fourth, putting the game out of reach.
Delaware State shoots 23-of-58 (39.7%) from the floor and just 4-17 (23.5) on three-point attempts.
Tierra Floyd stuffs the stat sheet with a team high 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocks.
DeMaurea Moore and Lyric Turner scores nine points each.
Florida A&M makes just 22-of-56 (39.3%) on field goal attempts, including 5-of-19 (26.3%) from beyond the arc.
Rattlers Shalaunda Burney-Robinson has 26 points and 21 rebounds, both game highs.
